It is very exciting to be part of the establishment of the
new Rotarian Fellowship of Quilters and Fiber Artists. I hope you are all
working on a block for the Celebration Quilt for the Rotary Convention at
Chicago in 2005.
I participated in the last quilt which was made for Rotary
in 1990, with the theme “Enjoy Rotary”. I have a photo of my block which was
displayed at the 1990 Convention in Portland and we are hoping to locate that
quilt to display in Chicago.
That quilt was the brainchild of Joyce Tubbs from
Nottingham, England, and was assembled and completed by Martha Lou Dean from
Illinois. Joyce had heard a speech by Past President Edward F. Cadman in which
he compared Rotary to a tapestry of nations, and she suggested it would be a
fine idea if a great Rotary
tapestry could be created.
The finished work, composed of squares of needlework of
various kinds representing the then 167 countries of Rotary, was finished to
commemorate Rotary’s 85th anniversary.
It will be equally exciting to see the “Celebration Quilt”
(an idea from Phyllis Giersch from Madera, California, well known quilter and
Vice-President of our Fellowship) take shape. Please join us in making this a
real celebration for Rotary’s 100th year.
FROM THE EDITOR:
I thought you might enjoy our cartoon lady “Cecily” (from
New Zealand, www.cecily.co.nz)
as our newsletter mascot. Cecily has many moods and thoughts as a woman, but I think this
one is really appropriate to us! Ailsa
